I started my model making pretty young, on long car journeys to visit my gradparents in Newcastle. Dad always used to by us sweets for the journey- more often than not a big bag of Starburst (then Opal Fruits) which I was not especially fond of. I used to spend my time squishing up the sweets and using them to make little models of food before I would eat them. I moved on to Fimo when it first started to become available in the UK and I got a kids Fimo jewellery kit for Christmas one year. I never bothered much with the jewellery designs in the accompanying brochure but instead started making little figures (generally of women with large breasts for some reason...French Maids in particular!?!) although over time this fizzled out somewhat..probably due to too much schoolwork and that kind of thing.
Despite this I always held onto my love for creating and ended up doing a degree in Illustration at Loughborough University, where right at the end of the first year we were set a character development project which culminated in making a model of our developed character. After realising those little figures I used to make as a child could be developed into a credible art form I found that from that point onwards I seemed to be only able to think in 3D when set a brief.
It has been quite some time since I graduated from University, and so far I have not managed to acheive anything much artistically although I've made a few personal acheivements (husband and daughter being the absolute centre of my universe!) but I'm still trying to get there with the artwork, doing little bits when I find the time, and hoping I eventually get brave enough to go out into the wild world and start showing people what I do in the hope they might like to publish it...and if it never happens I will still always love bringing those strange and magical characters in my head to life.
